- ABSTRACT Cancer has become one of the major causes of death in produktive age group. Several reports from hospitals show an increasing trend of cancer as cause of mortality. The National Household Surveys show increasing proportions of cancer as cause of death from 1.7% in 1976 to 3.4% in 1980 and 5.5% in 1995. The research question is wether there is any difference in the degree of depression in the form undergoing treatment by operation or combination (operation and radiotherapy). The study is done in 4 (four) hospitals in Yogyakarta. The study design is observasional with a cross-sectional approach. The measured are: surgical or combination treatment, demography, family history, clinical data and the respondent's perception. The HDRS (Hamilton depression Rating Scale) was used to measue the depression. The results of the study show that the proportion of depression in the form of sleep disturbance among breast cancer patients who got surgical treatment was 43,07% (28) and combination therapy 30.76% (20). The proportion of respondents who did not suffer from depression (sleep disturbance) after surgical treatment was 56,93% (37), while after combination treatment it was 69.24% (45). There are 4 (four) variables which are significantly related with sleep disturbance (p< 0.05). These are (1) the cost of treatment RR=3.62 (95% CI 2.05-6.3)
