- The objective of this thesis is investigated the role of "Kothekan Lesung" with dolanan song in the ruwatan ritual at Purwopuran Surakarta. The Ruwatan Kothekan Lesung ritual started as a new tradition for the Purwopuran society. Based on the hope that the community will be peaceful after the crisis those attach Sala City in the end of 1998. In connection with the problem that would be discussed which is related to social cultural life. Therefore, the writer needs to use different perspective for example anthropology, sociology, and various fundamentals to reveal the topic. The Ruwatan Kothekan Lesung at Purwopuran presented by K.R.H. Koesumotanoyo. The eldest shaman specialist and spiritual advises of Keraton Kasunanan Surakarta. The choice of Kothekan Lesung for the Purwopuran ritual is based on Koesumotanoyo concept, which is Pawitra Iking Tirta Ingudang Lumipur Desira Sadarum, which means purity, by water, there is hope and entertainment, so this is why Kothekan Lesung exsist as a part of ruwatan festival in Purwopuran. The present of Kothekan Lesung with the dolanan song that are a part of ruwatan ritual, is feat as important and necessary by the society that support it. It is evident that the Kothekan Lesung and dolanan song have means and function that is closely related with the life of Purwopuran's society especially and ruwatan participant in general. The Lesung and Alu musical instrument are seines as symbolic of purity, the voice gemontang lesung within tradition represent protection against evil. Also the lyric sung in the dolanan song contain educational meaning, guidance, hope or dream for everybody is society. The existence of Ruwatan Kothekan Lesung in Purwopuran is an extension of old cultural values that are still a live, relevant and have potential for development reminding us of is necessity in society. The exsistence of Kothekan Lesung in the center of performing arts development is a part of one rich cultural that must protect and preserved. Key words: Ruwatan Kothekan Lesung Dolanan song
