- ABSTRACT Migration in Indonesia, usually knows as merantau, is no longer dominated by spesific societies, such as Minangkaba, Aceh, and Bugis. "Merantau" has been done by Java, Sasak, and Flores societies. Besides that, "merantau" is not dominated only by male but also female. The destinations are not only regional border crossing, but also international. Seeing those various charac¬teristics, study on people migration is not enough if studied in the frame of classic theory such as push and pull factor theory. Therefore, this study offers a cultural perspective as an alternative perspective to study migration phenomena. The objective of this study is to lay open the meaning of "merantau" (migrate) within Motean society who live around Segara Anakan, Cilacap. By tracing the "footsteps" of people who left their home village through their story of "merantau" this research came up with the conclusion that "merantau" in Motean society is reflection of gender ideology. There were various considerations in decision making to leave home village were formed by individual understanding on culturaland social values in Motean, espe¬cially on gender values. In short, feminine and masculine symbols lie on the entire society life, including "merantau". This study was conducted in Motean Island, which is located in Ujungalang village, subdistrict of Kampung Laut, district of Cilacap, Central Java Province. Many people of Motean, Mainly young women and men, left their home village for a short or long time period. Jakarta, Bandung, Batam, Malaysia, and the off shores were "rantau" (destination areas) which they had chosen. This research used qualitative method. Observation and indepth inter¬view were the data collection method used in this study. Keywords: "merantau" (migrate) � reflection � gender idelogy.
