- ABSTRACT This research concentrates on the responses of the Islamic urban soci¬ety to the social changes in Bandung in the first half of the 2O'h century. Among the religious expressions of the urban society was the establishment of Islamic press in this town and the publications of newspaper and maga¬zines from the other cities. The research was done through the catalogues in Perpustakaan Nasional by analysing the oroginal sources of the publication in the form of both the original edition and its microfilms. At the minimum, there were 11 Islamic publications in Bandung and 12 in the other cities up to the 4th decade of the 20th century. The first Islamic magazine published in Bandung was Pembela Islam in 1929 by Komite Pembela Islam, a committee established by Persatuan Islam (Persis). Further, there were been varities in the profiles of Islamic publications, with the columns of religious affairs, ar¬ticles, reports, and also question and answer. Besides the Islamic press, there were also Sundanese press which intensely published the Islamic articles through integrated Sundanese-Islamic featutres. Keywords: Islamic Press. Development.
