  • In Umalulu, East Sumba, a house is not only considered as a physical building structure, but also as a cultural structure which a metaphor of Umalulu's social life and relating closely with the culture of the society. This study has an objective to obtain the knowledge concerning structural principles behind the phenomena of the Umalulu's society's culture by revealing related aspects with their traditional house. Furthermore, the revealed structure can be a model to understand cultural phenomena of the society. Therefore, the way to get it use Levi-Strauss structuralism approach. The result of this study shows that there are a few basic principles that consistently order the structure behind the form and the space order of the house. These ordering principles parallel the formal principles by which major activities of the society are organized. The first important principle of composition is a dyadic-triadic set. This classification system is primarily associated with a male sacred sphere and female profane sphere, where as the middle world is considered to be ambivalent in that it features both male and female traits. The second principle is the use of favorite numbers stratified according to value. The numbers are 2, 4, 8 and 16. The number 2 is significant in dualism concept, 4 is favored in the arrangement of social affairs, 8 is the valuable things, and 16 signals extraordinary concerns. Those two principles are structure's frame to show the Umalulu's mind model and demonstrated a cosmological antagonism coinciding with a classification of the cosmos into an upper, a middle and a lower world. These two opposition categories of classification give implication that both categories are relating and complementary by each other. The antagonism is essential and forms a totality. The ambivalent of middle world are responsible for the compromised equilibrium philosophy. Keywords : structure -- traditional house â metaphor -- basic principles.
