- ABSTRACT This study is an effort to understand and analysis the process of symbolical meaning in Sasak community, especially in Gelanggang village, East Sakra sub-district, eastern Lombok regarding the marital and divorce behaviors. This study is also done to understand its impact on their lifecycles. Participant observation and dept interview are employed as the method used to understand the Sasak community behaviors related to marriage and divorce phenomena. Descriptive method used to data analysis considered able to support data analysis maximally. � This research shows, that marriage is a sign to declare the.Sasakness male and female to be a members of the community. Based on this point of view, a man will be accepted as a member of the community when he or she was been a marriage. The declaration of the new members cause their status, responsible and their right in the community can be defined clearly. In another case, marriage can be a symbol for social status or social mobility, specifically in some groups with stronger economic status. Marriage and divorce also can be legitimating for male dominated. In other side, marriage for female is symbol for social identity and also for living insurance. The high female dependencies in marital institution make them accept all of the marital risk, including divorce and polygamy. Sasak community in Gelanggang village, understand that marriage as a responsible to the God. In this case, religion, tradition rule, and the formal rule (state rule) has become a frame to support the institution of marriage and divorce in the whole of Sasak community. So, the phenomena of marriage and divorce can't be seen as a deviant in the value of Sasak culture. The high intensity of divorce will affecting to the life aspects, mainly in household economy. In a divorce, female more risky to suffer as an excess of high dependency to their husband as the main economic responsibility. Female only has responsible to keep their own children growing. Divorce behaviors, therefore, will affecting the physical, emotional, psychological, and the economic welfare of the children. Key words: merarik, beseang, marriage divorce, Sasak community
