- ABSTRACT Alcoholysis of vegetable oils catalyzed by sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide has been widely studied. The use of both sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide as catalyst might give slightly higher oil conversion and the rate constant than the use of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide alone. Alcoholysis of nyamplung seed oil using sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide as catalyst was carried out in an autoclave equipped with thermometer, manometer, heater, rotating, and sampling devices. Samples were withdrawn at 10 minutes interval, then analyzed for their glycerine content by the acetin method. The correlation between glyceride conversion and reaction time, showed a pseudo first order reaction. The rate constant, k was affected by catalyst concentration, weight ratio of KOH to NaOH, and temperature exponentially. Using equivalent ratio of ethanol to nyamplung seed oil of 5.1, ratio of KOH to NaOH of 1.0, temperature of 100°C, 0.007 gram of catalyst per gram of nyamplung seed oil, the oil conversion was 67.98 % and rate constant k = 14.385 (10-3)
