  • Polyethylene is applied in human life, now, especially for wrapping. Usually, used polyethylene becomes a problem to the environment, since it is not biodegradable. Thermal degradation (i.e. pyrolysis) is one of several methods in the processing of plastic waste. The aim of this research is to. investigate wheather the aromatic compounds are produced in the pyrolysis of polyethylene materials using zeolite as a catalyst. The experiment was carried out in a batch process. Pyrolysis process was conducted in a cylindrical retort provided with an electrical heater, water cooler, and liquid product collector. About 50 g of polyethylene material and 5 to 15 g of zeolyte were pyrolyzed per batch. Three kinds of polyethylene were chosen: Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE), Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), and High Density Polyethylene (HDPE). The pyrolysis temperature was varied between 460° to 560°C. The liquid product was collected in certain time interval and weighed, while the gas volume was measured. The experiment was halted when no more liquid was produced. After that, the liquid product was analyzed with gas chromatography. Thermal degradation of polyethylene using zeolite as catalyst produced benzene, toluene, xylene, ethyl benzen, and isopropyl benzene in liquid product
