- Firms seeking to compete favorably in this era of stiff competition and constantly changing market-place have turned to their human resources as "a source of competitive advantage." In a bid to harness this advantage, they have resorted to employee empowerment programs. However, most of these programs have been disappointingly unsuccessful. Since available literature on the topic has mainly focused on its benefits, causes for its dismal performance in achieving its desired outcomes have not been widely exposed. This article therefore attempts to explore challenges that largely account for the high failure rate of empowerment programs, and suggest strategies for their successful implementation.
