- ABSTRACT Suspension insulators play important roles in both power electrical transmission and distribution systems. They support the lines mechanically and isolate the lines from the ground. The insulators should withstand the voltage in the rainy as well as in the dry season. By applying some artificial rain and oscillatory impulse voltages, representing real lightning and switching surges, breakdown voltage of the insulator can be deeply investigated. It is clear that the higher the diameter of the ceramic insulator, the more value of the breakdown voltage. In addition, with the same diameter size, the ceramic insulator is able to withstand higher impulse oscillatory waveshape voltage than the glass insulator. Futher result shows that in general depending on the frequency of the oscillatory impulse voltage there is a trend the more the rain falls the less breakdown voltage will be for both type of insulators. Moreover, for ceramic insulator with diameter 56 cm, the bigger the front time of the impulse voltage, it can be observed that, the less isolator breakdown voltage will be.
