Daftar Isi:
- Ascariasis is one of the most widespread parasitic infections, particularly in the tropical and sub-tropical region of the world. Epidemiological study in Yogyakarta revealed that the prevalence of ascaris infection in children was 79.2%. The infection, which is caused by ascariasis lumbricoides, was commonly associated with poor nutritional status. A prospective study was carried out in rural areas of Yogyakarta special region in 1989. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of treatment of ascariasis with pirantel pamoat on wight of elementary school children. Seventy children from the 2nd grade of the elementary school ranging of age 7 - 8 years, who excreted ascaris eggs in their stool were included in this study. Only 67 out of 70 cases can be followed it up in the study. The mean of body weight before treatment were 18.179 ± 0.302, after first treatment were 19,179 ± 0.276 and after second treatment were 19.358 ± 0.286. The result of stool examination showed that 4 (6.0%) children were positive after first and second treatment, 17 (25.4%) positive after first treatment and negative after second treatment, 9 (13.4%) negative after first treatment and positive after second treatment and 37 (55.2%) negative both after first and second treatment. The weight gained after first and second treatment were as follows the group with negative ascaris in the first and second treatment were 1.452 ± 1.171, positive after first treatment and negative after second treatment were 1.300 ± 0.571, negative after first and positive after second were 0.954 ± 0.879 and positive both after first and second treatment were 1.000 ± 0.816. The cure rate of the treatment in children with body weight less than -2 SD negative stool examination in 4 (40%), body weight mean 2 SD in 29 (55%) and body weight more than +2 SD negative in 4 (80%). There is relationship between nutritional status of children and cure rate of the treatment, although it was not statistically significant. The weight gain during study in the children with good nutritional status were higher than that of children with low nutrition status. Key words: ascaris, deworming, pirantel pamoat, gain weight, nutritional status.
