- ABSTRACT This research on a polemic due to an article Menyegarkan Kembali Pemahaman Islam on the rubric of Opini in Kompas of November 18th 2002.1 apply Michel Foucault's discourse analysis model to deconstruct so that its historical state reveals itself. Since the polemic takes place in the opinion rubric, the deconstruction will touch upon the position of the mass media too. Thus the research will deal mostly with the mass media space rather than with geographical sites. The subject of this study has been constructed and mediated by the mass media. I encounter therefore a fiction of socio cultural phenomena which has been reproduced by the power of mass media. We deconstruct the archives of MKPI texts and their two counter text. We find that there is a contradiction in the interpretation of Alquran and Sunah. The contradiction is due to the different way of interpreting Alquran and Sunah, one is literary and the other is non literary. The mass media constructs a contested a space based on a simple dualism. The creation of the polemic has nothing to do with a substantial issue of religious value except for business reason.
