  • . ABSTRACT In investigations of mixing of mass and of momentum in open-channels (waterways), it is of great importance to have a reliable quantification of diffusion and dispersion coefficients. The objective of the present study is to gain a better understanding of the dispersion coefficient which is appeared in the two dimensional momentum equations. This can be obtained by mathematical (numerical) modeling the flow fields and/or by performing extensive measurements in an open channel. This paper presents some laboratory data and numerical simulations which allow determination of the dispersion coefficients in two-dimensional flow. Application of this analysis in two-dimensional flow around a cylinder shows a good correlation between ,the numerical and experimental results.
