  • This present study was designed to comparatively investigate 16 Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from bovine mastitis (n=8) and human diseases (n=8). The S. aureus strains were characterized by phenotypic and genotypic methods. The S. aureus could be identified and further characterized by their cultural and bichemical properties. The 16 S. aureus were additionally investigated for gene polymorphisms of the protein A (spa) gene. Amplification of the gene encoding the repeat number in the Xr-region of protein A gene yielded amplicons with a size of 100, 150, 200, 250, 280, 300 and 330 by that correspond with the number of repeats of 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10 and 11, respectively. It was of interest that the sizes of the amplified fragments from human isolates were longer than from bovine isolates. The occurrence of the variation in size of the amplified fragment among S. aureus isolates from bovines and humans in this study might be related to pathogenic properties of individual strain.
