- Menthol has been synthesized from citronella) isolated product of citronalla oil. Citronella oil was got from the market in Yogyakarta. Citronellal has been isolated from citronella oil by using fractional distillation with reducing pressure. Citronellal with the purity of 90,08% was obtained by fraction distillation of 72-98 C/8 mmHg. Citronellal was cyclized by using various catalysts i.e., concentrated HC1 and H2SO4, acetic anhydride, zeolite, activated bentonite and clay, to make isopulegol. The hydrogenation reaction of isopulegol into menthol used a nickel catalyst. Citronellal, cyclization and hydrogenation yields were analyzed with gas chromatograph, infrared and HI nmr spectrometers. Physical constants like density, refractive index, and optical rotation have also been determined. The experimental has shown that cyclization by the zeolite catalyst gave the highest conversion, that is 93,20%. The high convertion of isopulegol into menthol 83,13% was reached when the reaction was done at 75 -100 C for 6 hours. Key words: citronellal cyclization catalytic hydrogenation -- identification
