  • The concentration of selenium (Se), lead (Pb) and rubidium (Rb) elements in the sera of goitre patients from the population in Sawangan District has been determined. The control was the population in Mungkid district in the residence of Magelang, Central Java. The prevalence of goitre patients in Sawangan and Mungkid district are 22,13% and 3,21%. In this research the woman patients are chosen as samples with the following criteria: healthy, age between 17-45 years, not pregnant and not in lactating condition and of low social economic status. The patients fast for 12 hours before their blood being taken in the morning from the venous vessel, residing for 30 minutes and then centrifugated with 2500 rotary perminutes for 15 minutes. The sera is separated and kept in polyethylene bottle at the temperature of -20°C. Flame atomic absorption spectrometry method is used to analyze Se and Pb by carbon rod atomizer and Rb by micro sample techniques. Results of trace elements analysis, show that endemic goitre cases in Sawangan district is closely related to the low content of Se serum and the high content of goitrogenic elements of Pb and Rb. The element interaction between Se to Pb and Rb shows that Se/Pb ratio based on the goitre class is increasing and the age addition of goitre patients in Sawangan relatively constant, and the value is lower than the control, while Pb/Se ratio increases with the development of goitre class and age, the value is higher than the control. Key words: selenium -- lead -- rubidium -- goitre endemic cases
