- Eighteen 3-ears old bulk cocoa hybrids planted in North Segayung Plantation and Pagilaran Plantation, Batang, Central Java, were used as plant material to study the probability of using the in vivo leaf nitrate reductase activities as an alternative parameter to select cocoa yield potential at the early production period. The result showed that leaf nitrate reductase activities of bulk cocoa hybrids indicated large variation among hybrids, yield potential groups in one cocoa hybrid and responded to fertilizer application and location. Cocoa leaf nitrate reduct,Yrice activities indicated significant negative correlation with yield potential among coco hybrids before fertilizer application (r = -0,79*) and after fertilizer application (r = - 0,53*). The difference of cocoa leaf nitrte reductase activities as influenced by fertilizer application indicated significant positive correlation with yield potential among cocoa hybrids (r = 0, 74*) and with yield potential groups in one cocoa hybrid (r 0,29*). The behaviour of cocoa leaf nitrate reductase activities to be used as yield predictor in short period were not consistent. Thus the application of nitrate reductase activities as predictive test of yield potential need further study in terms of leaf physiological conditions relevant to the plant physiological conditions in bearing stage.
