- ABSTRAK Two problems related to the development of red onion farming were the low productivity and the price fluctuation. The risk arising from the red onion farming and the farmer's risk aversion were the causes of these problems. To overcame these problems, research had been conducted in the District of Panjatan, Kulon Progo Regency to study farmer's behavior toward risk and the effect socio-economic factors. The research was conducted through a survey method, by taking the region and farmer samples purposively. The analysis models took quadrat utility function and the regression analysis with the power function. The results of the analysis showed the averse behaviors toward risk in red onion farming were shared by the majority of farmers. The socio-economic factors effected these behaviors toward risk were experience in farming, family size, price ratio and frequency of failure. High risk aversion was associated to short experience, small family size, small price ratio and large failure frequency. Keywords: behavior toward risk utility risk averse
