  • Gnetum gnemon L. is a dioecious plant. The nature brings difficulty in commercial cultivation of this species since its sex can only be judged after it reaches five to seven years old when it flowers for the first time. In some dioecious species, such as nutmeg, sex could be determined cytologically. This study aimed to find differences in chromosomal structure both sex of G. gnemon L. Preparations were made from young leaves tip of mature plants and the young plants (seedlings). Squash method was applied following Jahier et al. (1996) with slight modification. Observations were made on chromosome morphology, that was number and measures including length of long and short arms, absolute length, and arm ratio. Chromosomal data were analysed following nested design scheme, which output was used to obtain the male and female chromosome formula. Karyogram and Idiogram were also made from the data. Both sex had similar chromosomal number, 2n 48. No heteromorphic chromosome was found. Absolute length for male Gnetum was 1,88 â 5,55 [4.m and for female was 1,99 â 4,26 1.1.m. The formula was found to be 12m + 12sm + 20st + 4stsAT for male and 8m + 18sm + 18st + 2smsAT 2AT sr- for female. The satellites were located at chromosome no. 2 and 5 in male, classified as subtelocentric, and at chromosome no. 1 and 4 in female, classified as submetacentric and subtelocentric respectively. Apparent reason why differences between both sex occur was differentiation process which follows "The Abortion Pattern". Based on data taken from seedlings, 70% tended toward female was observed.
