- ABSTRACT This research was done in the green house and laboratOry of the Department of Soil, Faculty of Agriculture, Gadjah Mada University from August 2001 to February 2002. Soil was taken from Kroya, Central Java and South Kalimantan. Research objective was to study soil acidity changes and their corresponding effect on rice growth and macro nutrient absorption when peat was given to acid sulphate soil coupled with leaching and ameliorant addition. The study was arranged in a factorial experiment of completely randomized design dealing to three factors: soil, peat, and ameliorant. Soil factor was associated by different: reactivity of acid sulphate soil: reactive (5.03% pyrite content) and unreactive (0.47% pyrite content). Peat factor related to addition of either 5% or 10% peat. Three ameliorants, sea water at 50% strength, 2% animal manure, and lime at 50% soil acidity was singly applied. Every combination treatment was replicated three times. Prior to ameliorant addition, mixtures of soil and peat were leached by water and sea water amelioration was applied in conjunction of leaching. Leached water was analyzed for H+ leached and Al3+, N, P, and K absorption of the rice plants and soil acidity at the end of the experiment. The results showed that: (1) leaching had removed a large portion of soluble acids in acid sulphate soil. The more reactive of soil (higher pyrite content) removed the greater soluble acids. Used of sea water as replacement and leaching agent dislodged more ion acid from the adsorbing complex compared to water. (2) Rice plants could only grow in reactive acid sulphate soil when lime was given. (3) Application of animal manure to unreactive acid sulphate soil led to absorb the greater amount of N, P, and K. (4) Soluble acid decreased in application of leaching-combined, peat application and amelioration, while reduction of exchangeable acidity would not take place when animal manure was used an ameliorant. In reactive acid sulphate soil, liming decreased more H' soluble ion and exchangeable one than both sea water and animal manure. Furthermore, both soluble and exchangeable Al' in both reactive or unreactive acid sulphate soil was downed to practically zero with liming.
