- ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to study the role of ABA and osmoconditioning in three moisture content levels, and interaction between them on Arabica coffee seed viability. Research was done for three months from May to July 2004. Research was conducted by using Factorial Completely Randomized Design with three treatments i. e: 2 levels of ABA concentration: 0 and 10 ppm, 3 levels of desiccation/seed water content: 14,12 and 10%, and 4 levels of osmoconditioning duration: control, 3,5 and 7 day, with 3 replicates. Data was analyzed by analysis of variance. The effect that was significant at the level of 5%, continued with DMRT 5%. The results showed that ABA had important roles in increasing of Arabica coffee seed tolerance to desiccation by increasing proline and c^tocopherol content, and maintaining starch content, that prevent the accumulation of free fatty acids, that in the end maintained seed emergence ability stayed high. Osmoconditioning did not show important role in seed viability repairmen if ABA had been applied before desiccation. Without ABA application, osmoconditioning had important role by increasing a-tocopherol content that made seed emergence ability better. Base on seed emergence ability, osmoconditioning could substitute the role of ABA if seed water content only decreased to 12%. Keywords: ABA -osmoconditioning -desiccation -coffea arabica
