Daftar Isi:
- The research was conducted on petrology and geochemistry of coal at Warukin Formation, Barito Basin, in South Kalimantan. Research is focused on the composition and behavior of low rank coal toward its liquefaction. The sampling location is in the coal mining concession of PT. Adaro Indonesia which involves some mining location such as Wara, Tutupan and Paringin area. The sampling was conducted in seam Wara 110, Wara 120, Wara 200, Tutupan 210 and Paringin 712 with ply by ply method. Sample analysis consists of proximate and ultimate properties, composition of maseral, reflectance vitrinite, as well as composition of mineral, major element and organic geochemistry. Experiment of coal liquefaction was conducted on the autoclave with temperature and pressure of 120o C and 1 atm. The problems are focused on influence of maceral, mineralogy and geochemistry of low rank coal especially of Warukin Formation on its liquefaction as well as behavior of coal liquefaction to the variable change of time to the result of coal liquefaction yield. The physical and chemical characteristics of coal in Wara seam are ash content (< 7 %) adb, inherent moisture (< 31%) adb, volatile matter (< 50%) adb and fixed carbon (< 33%) adb. Then in Tutupan and Paringin are ash content (< 3%) adb, inherent moisture (< 21%) adb, volatile matter (< 48%) adb and fixed carbon (< 40 %) adb. Composition element in Wara coal are carbon (< 64 %) adb, hydrogen (< 7 %) adb, oxygen (< 34%) adb and nitrogen (< 1%) adb, then in Tutupan dan Paringin seams consist of carbon (< 65 % adb), hydrogen (< 6 %) adb, oxygen (< 32%) adb and nitrogen (< 2%) adb. The content of maseral in Wara seam coal consist of vitrinite, liptinite, inertinite maseral group which are 81%, 51% and 27% respectively. Then composition of maseral in Tutupan and Paringin seam are dominated by maceral vitrinite, liptinite and inertinit which are 76%, 27% and 18% respectively. Vitrinite reflectance (Vr) of Wara seam is 0.33%, then vitrinite reflectance of Tutupan and Paringin coal are 0.44%. Based on its vitrinite reflectance, coal of Wara seam is classified to lignite, then Tutupan and Paringin seam are subbituminous. Beside that Wara, Tutupan and Paringin coal seam contain an-organic matter which are pyrite, quartz, rutile, kaolinite, ghoethite, calcite, dolomite and feldspar. Pyrite can have an important role by increasing liquefaction process as catalyst. Composition of organic compound is characterized by functional group. In Wara seam it is indicated by the occurrence of aliphatic C-H which are aldehydes, amides, alkanes, carbo acid, amines, anhydride and amine group in the wave range of 3000-2500 cm-1 in FTIR analysis. Then aromatic C-H occur dominantly in Tutupan and Paringin seams which are aldehydes, carbo-acid and amides in the wave range of 3000-3100 cm-1. vii Result of coal liquefaction on Wara seam with time reaction of 30 minutes is 48.60 % and for 60 minutes is 51.27%. The result of liquefaction is decreasing on reaction time of 90 minutes and 120 minutes, which are 46.72%, 35.51% respectively. The liquefaction result on Tutupan and Paringin seams obtained on reaction time of 30 minutes and 60 minutes are 8.22%, 18.35% respectively. The result is decreasing when the reaction time is 90 minutes and 120 minutes which is 6.23%, 5.54% respectively. Lignite is easier to be liquefied than subbituminous because it contains molecule structure with more hydroxyl group.
