  • The background of this research is the issuance of Law No. 13 of 2012 concerning the Privileges of Yogyakarta Special Region which one of its provisions contains the appointment of the Sultanate Institute as a legal entity that can be the subject of property rights to land. On one hand, the appointment of the Sultanate as a legal entity gives a certain status of the position as the subject of rights to land. On the other hand, it will change the management of Sultanate ground. Therefore, the objectives of this research are to obtain an explanation of the management of the Sultanate Ground after the enactment of Law No. 13 of 2012 and to identify the matters that may arise related to the management of Sultanate ground. This research is a descriptive research by using normative juridical approach, which was by proposing an overview of the development of the management of Sultanate ground both before and after the enactment of Law No. 13 of 2012 and analyzing based on laws and regulations. In order to obtain research materials/data, a library research was conducted by collecting the prevailing laws and regulations, the writings of experts and documents related to the research materials. In addition, field research was conducted by interviewing the resource persons related to the management of Sultanate ground such as Head of Land Rights and Land Registry Regional Office of the National Land Agency (BPN) of Yogyakarta Province, Head Land Office of Yogyakarta City, Head of Land Section Local Government of Yogyakarta Province and Staff in the Panitikismo Office of the Yogyakarta Palace. From the results of interviews and observations on the documents after being analyzed using the approach to the laws and regulations related to the problems, it can be concluded that the appointment of the Sultanate as a legal entity that can be the subject of property rights to land changed the status of the Sultanate institutions becoming a Legal Entity equivalent with a private legal entity. The consequences of such a change altered the management of Sultanate ground and the obligations and responsibilities incurred must be met by the Sultanate institution in managing the Sultanate ground.
