- The study of society perception, participation and action is very important for the development of forest management that involved the society. One of the programs is Hutan Kemasyarakatan (HKm). The purpose of this research is to know society perceptions about management of HKm, factors that affect the perception, and impact of the perception to society action about management of HKm in Katongan Village. The qualitative approach with case studies method was used in this research. Data was retrieved by the techniques of observation, deep interviews with interview guide assistance and documentation. Qualitative data analysis was inductive and done before the research, during the research, and after the research. Based on the result, there were some perceptions from member of Kelompok Tani Hutan Kemasyarakatan (KTHkm) and also non-member. Some of them assumed that the management of HKm was positive because can increase standard living and also as a process of learning to improve the knowledge, ability and skill in managing the forest. But, not all people understood about managing HKm. There were three factors that affect society perception, which were the past experience, amount of information that society obtained, and member status of KTHKm. Impact of the perceptions affected society action in managing HKm which was the way of managing HKm was according to instruction of KTHKm management and the Department of Forestry that pointed to sustainability principles and society action in effort of HKm sustainability.
