  • Utilization of teak wood sawdust as particleboardâs material is one of solutions for reducing biomass wastes. Particleboard industry mostly uses formaldehyde based adhesive which is potentially dangerous for humanâs health. Citric acid is an organic material that potentially being an natural bonding agent for particleboard. Optimum pressing temperature is needed to enhance the quality of particle board. The main goal of this research was to analyse the effect of citric acid addition and pressing temperature on the physical and mechanical properties of particle board made from teak wood sawdust. This research was conducted in accordance with completely randomized design with two factors were amount of citric acid (0 wt%, 5 wt% and 10 wt% resin content based on weight of air-dried particles) and pressing temperature (180ÂoC and 200ÂoC). The process was conducted under 3.6 MPa of pressing pressure during 10 minutes and target density was 0,9 g/cm3. The physical and mechanical properties were tested in accordance of JIS A 5908-2003 standard, i.e. moisture content, density, thickness swelling, surface roughness, MOR, MOE, internal bond strength and water absorption (FAO 1996). Data was further analyzed using SPSS application and HSD examination (Honestly Significant Difference) Tukeyâs at level 99% and 95%. The results showed that interaction between two factors influenced the thickness swelling and water absorption of the particle board. The increase of citric acid amount tend to decrease the value of moisture content, thickness swelling, water absorption, and surface roughness, as well as increasing the value of MOR, MOE, and internal bond strength. All particleboardâs by adding the 10 wt% of citric acid met (physical and mechanical properties) JIS A 5908-2003 type 8 standard. The pressing temperature gave an significant effect to the value of moisture content, thickness swelling, water absorption, MOR and MOE. The optimal properties of the particle board was obtained by adding the 10 wt% of citric acid and 200ÂoC of pressing temperature with the average value 5.45% of moisture content
