- Mapping of the ocean, especially bathymetric mapping is a fundamental necessity in order to provide spatial information relevant for activities, planning, and decision making related to information in the marine field. Lately, bathymetric mapping can be done by several technologies and methods. The application of acoustic technology continues to develop for scientific purposes. Acoustic technologies are also used to study the process of sound propagation in water medium that capable for providing basic water information, communication, and positioning in the water. The application of acoustic technology is using side scan sonar and multibeam echosounder to collect position and situation data in hydrographic survey. One of the hydrographic survey activities utilizing acoustic technology is conducted by BPPT-Teknologi survei kelautan in Balongan Indramayu. This area representats an example of seabed structure where development oil pipeline owned by Pertamina takes place. The hydrographic survey aimed to obtain information of seabed condition, using side scan sonar and multibeam echosounder to determine pipeline position and seabed object such as pipeline. Survey or mapping using multibeam echosounder and side scan sonar are included into thematic mapping that produce a map to describe the environment based on the results of the survey. Hydrographic survey using side scan sonar and multibeam data will produce a map to interpretate seabed condition. It can be used for many purposes related to planning and construction of infrastructure on the seabed in Balongan Indramayu. Triton Isis software and Caris Hips and Sips were used to process side scan sonar and multibeam echosounder data. It is expected that the use of this software is to facilitate the interpretation of the local seabed conditions in Balongan. The final stage is making a seabed conditions map, based on side scan sonar data and depth data from multibeam echosounder. From the stage of processing side scan sonar data using software Triton Isis, object on the ocean floor in regional Balongan such as pipeline can be interpreted. The result of the classification sediment in the area Balongan, shows Balongan seabed area is dominated by clay sediment. Meanwhile, multibeam data processed using Caris Hips and Sips is to generate depth, the result of which ranges from 1 m to 38 m. The seabed condition map using the side scan sonar and multibeam echosounder data can provide information on the state of the sea floor in the form of depth, sediment type, and seabed object, so that data can be used for many purposes related to the planning and construction of seabed infrastructure.
