  • Mangrove is one of vital habitats for the balance of coastal ecosystem and plays an active role in maintaining the balance of coastal environment. Humankind frequently overlooks the importance of maintaining the balance of nature and only concerned with the satisfaction to fulfill the necessities of life. Environmental issue in Baros coastal area is caused by excessive land use. Mangrove cultivation becomes one of solution to restore the balance of Baros coastal ecosystem. This issue will be studied in depth by applying deep ecology concept proposed by Arne Naess. The goal of this study is to analyze the role of the society by reviewing deep ecology concept as an alternative solution. Material object of this study is the role of the society in the management of mangrove forest, while formal object is deep ecology concept by Arne Naess as an environmental ethics. The material of this study is derived from books, research papers, articles and graduating papers about environmental ethics, deep ecology concept, environmental management, mangrove species, function and role of mangrove, and the role of society. This study is presented using a literature study and supported by the observation method. The beginning steps of this study are collecting, classifying, and processing the data. Method of data which is applied is philosophical hermeneutics and as for the elements of this method are description, interpretation, idealization, induction, and holistic. Deep ecology by Arne Naess becomes a basis for analyzing the role of the society in Baros coastal area in managing the mangrove forest. Damage may occur due to either the lack of awareness of the society or the stakeholders on the importance of preserving the environment. The changing of Baros coastal environment in which used for a habitation and cultivated land may experience a serious decline in quality if it is not managed properly. Therefore, either the society or the stakeholders should be aware if nature is not to possess individually and reduce continually. Keeping a good relationship among others in meeting vital needs, developing a sense of belonging, and taking a real action in preserving the environment are able to apply in order to create awareness. Mangrove cultivation becomes a good solution in restoring ecological balance. However, there should be awareness and a good cooperation in managing mangrove habitat. Hence, the changing of point of view and wise attitude in treating the nature should always be possessed by all societies and the stakeholders in Baros coastal area. Key words: the management of coastal environment, deep ecology, society awareness
