  • Gasification of biomass is one of the alternative technology for converting solid biomass into energy in the form of thermochemical gas. Results of previous studies that use gasifier type updraft still produce the amount of tar and syngas which are much less clean. Gasifier modification is a way to reduce tar. One of them is with the pyrolysis gas recirculation. This study was conducted to determine the variation of pyrolysis gas valve opening and the air valve on the performance of rice husk gasification materials and updraft gasifier using sawdust. The study was conducted by giving the variation of the air valve opening which are valve opening Â1⁄2, Â3⁄4, and filled with a combination of variations in the pyrolysis gas valve opening which are valve opening Â1⁄4, Â1⁄2 and Â3⁄4. The measurement of gasification performance was observed through influential parameters which are the temperature of the stove, the gas temperature, reactor temperature, effective and operational time, as well as the rest of the ingredients, and the main parameter which is the mass of tar. The results of the study show that pyrolysis gas recirculation can enhance the performance of updraft gasifier from several aspects, which are the temperature rise from 403.39 oC to 481.71 oC, and the temperature rise of the combustion zone is from 590.61 oC into 593.87 oC. The length of time of the effective gasification process is also increased with the average increasing time 4.61 minutes when the valve opening enlarged, and there is an increasing in operating time in approximately 4.94 minutes. Tar mass also decrease from the range of 0.134 - 0.161 kg to 0.13 kg - 0.159 kg. From the measurement parameters in the form of percentage, best variation was obtained in the air openings Â3⁄4 with the combination of pyrolysis opening Â3⁄4 for the biomass material mixture to rice husk and sawdust.
