  • The objective of this study is to examine the effect of knowledge cognition on organizational performance and knowledge cognition on knowledge creation, and also to verify the mediating role of knowledge creation in the relation between knowledge cognition and organizational performance. SME food sector disposed to tacit knowledge, and need a study to verify the role of tacit knowledge on knowledge cognition for better performance. The research was conducted on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the food sector in Yogyakarta. This study reached 122 respondents by distributing questionnaires. The results show that knowledge cognition has positive effect on organizational performance and knowledge cognition has a positive effect on knowledge creation. This study also reveals that knowledge creation has no positive effect on organizational performance and knowledge creation has no mediating role in the relation between knowledge cognition and organizational performance. Findings of the study indicate that SMEâ��s leader has cognitive style as innovator who prefer to work with knowledge that is relatively tacit, and the leader plays an important role in the transfer of tacit knowledge to knowledge creation.
