- This undergraduate thesis discusses the ambiguity of sign and absurdity concept in the play script Oh les Beaux Jours by Samuel Beckett, published in 1963. This play script tells about the absurdity life of a couple named Willie and Winnie. Philosophically, absurd is a nonsense or useless thing. The absurdity came from the conflict between a human conscious and the irrational circumstances of nature that give a vanity in a life. That thing exposes human to two options: the suicide and restoration of life. The absurdity problems in the play script Oh Les Beaux Jours bring to people about the meaning of life. Therefore, the meaning of absurdity in the play script is interesting to be analyzed. However, the absurdity meaning in this play script is explained through the ambiguous signs that inflict the confusion. So, the ambiguous signs in this play script is an important thing to be analyzed. To solve the problems, the ambiguous signs in the play script Oh Les Beaux Jours will be analyzed by using the Riffaterres semiotics theory. This theory consist four principles. The first principle is semantic direction. The second principle is heuristic reading and retroactive reading. The third principle is matrix, model and variants. The fourth principle is the hypogram. Through those principles, the meaning of absurdity in the play script can be more explicit.
