  • Background: Counseling is often ignored and not implemented. In actual fact, it can improve postpartum mothers' knowledge of contraception that can be used in the postpartum period. Objective of Research: To identify the effects of contraceptive counseling on knowledge and use of effective contraceptive method in postpartum mothers and other influential factors at RSUD Ulin Banjarmasin. Method: The design of this research was a experiment with pretest-posttest control group design. The data is taken to the postpartum mothers' in February 8â��March 14, 2014. Grouping of samples with random allocation and sampling employed a consecutive sampling numbering 68 respondents of experimental group and 68 respondents of control group. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate test employing paired t-test, independent t-test and Chi-square with a significance level of p <0.05 and multivariable analysis employing linear regression and logistic regression. Results of Research: In the experimental group of contraceptive counseling, there was an increasing mean of knowledge by 18.81 point between before and after counseling, and significant with p value of 0.001. There were differences of mean of knowledge between counseling and non-counseling group at 17.96 and significant with p value of 0.001. Proportion of postpartum mothers who used the effective contraceptive method in the counseling group was higher than that of non -counseling group (OR: 3.75, 95% CI = 1.54 to 9.14). There were no influence of age, education, economic status, parity, and the role of the husband on knowledge and use of effective contraception. Conclusion: The provision of contraceptive counseling significant improve knowledge and use of effective contraceptive on postpartum mothers. Factors of age, education, economic status, parity, husband's role and labor method do not affect knowledge and use of effective contraceptive method
