  • In the past, criticism to the state in any kind of forms was highly prohibited. Criticsm occurred in the New Order Era was a concrete example of how criticism was forbidden and democracy had not met its actual form. After the collapse of the New Order, Indonesia entered the Reform period which has changed everything. Indonesia then goes to the freedom of democracy. The development of the media and cultural industries have also supported democracy. Sentilan Sentilun (SS) as the main entertainment program on Metro TV which always gives most ardent critiques to the state during the leadership of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY). As a television program that combines elements of theater and parody, SS does not only invite the audience to laugh, but also constructs the face of Indonesia. Discourse about the state and corruption has been so dominant in itself. Indonesia faces are more interesting to be seen through from the point of view of audiences who brought the concept about identity of Indonesia. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to see how the encoding/decoding occured between the media and the audiences through the SS program on Metro TV. Thus, this study is an audience research study with qualitative research methods. For data collection, I involved six audiences into a FGD. The data have been analyzed with approaches of Stuart Hallâ��s encoding/decoding and other approaches of the cultural studies. The conclusion based on the analysis of audience reception is that most audiences in this research can be categorized in a negotiated position. At the end, the SS is just a television entertainment program that does not only make the audience entertained, but also has the opportunity to send critiques to the state. However, it makes the SS and the media itself full of problems. It also makes the audiences do not believe the media and the state.
