  • Light intensity control does not only have an impact on energy savings, but also provides an appropriate level of illuminance to meet its requirement. An application of series-compensator MERS as a light intensity controller will be proposed. Experiment is conducted by connecting MERS in series with fluorescent lamp and magnetic ballast. MERS can inject voltage at a variable value by controlling its firing angle. The voltage change in lamp will affect the light intensity produced by the lamp itself. Experimental results show that MERS with 6.43 Î1⁄4F of capacitor can operate as a light intensity controller on two 36 W fluorescent lamps within range of 34.4% - 106.2%. The maximum reduction of efficacy is 8.1%, whereas its maximum addition is 3%.
