- Background: Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) is the most common benign condition in elderly men. BPH may lead to benign prostate enlargement (BPE), lower urinary tract symptom (LUTS), and or bladder outlet obstruction (BOO). Persistence BOO was compensated with detrusor muscle hypertrophy that can be seen with ultrasound as detrusor wall thickness (DWT) thickening. Measurement of DWT using ultrasound is a new methode to diagnose BOO. In clinical routine, measurement of free uroflowmetry, postvoid residual urine volume (PVR), and prostate volume are used to estimate BOO. Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the correlation between DWT and PVR in patients with benign prostate enlargement. Materials and Methods: This study is an observational analytical study of 35 men, 50 year old with benign prostate enlargement, that fullfilled inclusion and exclusion criteria. Subjects were included in this study by concecutive sampling. Bladder volume, prostate volume, DWT, and PVR are measured with transabdominal ultrasound examination by a radiologist. Normality of the data was tested with Saphiro-Wilk test. The correlation between DWT and PVR was tested with Pearson correlation test. Result: The Pearson correlation test to evaluate correlation between DWT and PVR in patients with benign prostate enlargement revealed r value =0,230 and p value =0,183. Conclusion: DWT value revealed a weak positive correlation with PVR in patients with benign prostate enlargement, but the correlation is not significant(r=0,230, p=0,183, p>0,05). PVR alone cannot be used and substituted DWT evaluation to diagnose BOO.
