  • The chitosan/Îocarrageenan polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) composite films had been synthesized and tested as adsorbents for the removal of methylene blue (MB). The films were prepared by mixing chitosan and Îokaraginan in aqueous solution. Films were then characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Adsorption capabilities were studied by varying the chitosan and Îocarrageenan composition ratios, pH, time contacts and concentrations of MB while the desorptions were conducted at acidic solutions. The reusabilityof adsorbent for MB adsorption after desorption was also studied and the films were used to adsorp MB twice. All these treatments were analyzed using UVVis spectrophotometer. The synthesis film was succeed as shown in FTIR results and the surface morphology of film was changed before and after adsorption also after desorption as shown in SEM results. The MB uptake of the film with 40:60 ratios of chitosan and Îocarrageenan was the highest in neutral pH conditions. Pseudosecondorder equation predicted well the kinetics of adsorption with the adsorption achieved within 15 min. The film showed the maximum adsorption capacity of MB at 425.35 mg/g and the adsorption followed Langmuir isotherm model. This adsorbent was also able to be reused for the adsorption of MB, after desorption process using distilled water at pH 2. Therefore, the use of chitosan/Îocarrageenan PEC composite film in this work proved to be promising adsorbent for removing methylene blue from aqueous solutions
