- Physical properties of lipstick are defined from the waxes, oils and fats base. Frequently used bases in lipstick formulation are paraffin wax and carnauba wax. Paraffin wax has to be combined with other wax, so it will not cause the lipstick to be weak and brittle. Anthocyanin that is contained in ethanolic extract of hibiscus petals (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L.) is potential as lipsticks natural dyes. This study aims to determine combination composition of paraffin wax and carnauba wax providing optimum formula, to determine optimum formula lipsticks stability during 28 days of storage, and to know its safety. Dried powder of petals extracted with petroleum ether and ethanol 96%, was thickened and then the anthocyanin compounds were identified. Three lipstick formulas using 6% of extract with various bases of paraffin wax and carnauba wax, which physical properties tested including hardness, adhesion power, melting point, hedonic and pH. Optimum formula was obtained by using Simplex Lattice Design method, which stability tested for 28 days and primary skin irritation tested qualitatively. Data were analyzed by t-test, Wilcoxon, ANOVA and Kruskall-Wallis. The optimum formula ethanolic extract of hibiscus petals lipstick (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L.) contains paraffin wax 12,71% and carnauba wax 12,83%. Lipstick is stable on its scent, taste, pH, hardness, melting point and adhesion power. Nevertheless, unstable on its color and shape but not showing an irritation reaction.
