- application as adsorbents of Co(II) and Ni(II) metal ions in aqueous solution have been studied. MCM-41 and Fe-MCM-41 were synthesized with sodium silicate as silica source, cethyltrimethylammonium bromide as surfactant, and iron(III) nitrate nonahydrate as iron source. After all reagents in the synthesis were mixed homogeneously, the mixtures were sonicated at room temperature for 60 minutes, 90 minutes, 120 minutes and 150 minutes. Then the solid materials were filtered, dried at 110 ÂoC for 6 hours, and calcined at 550 ÂoC for 6 hours. MCM-41 and Fe-MCM-41 were characterized by using XRD, FTIR, TEM, and SAA. Fe-MCM-41 was used for adsorption of Co(II) and Ni(II) metal ions. The amount of Co(II) and Ni(II) metal ions adsorbed on Fe-MCM-41 was analyzed by using AAS. The results showed that the optimum product of MCM-41 was obtained during sonication for 90 minutes. Equilibrium time for adsorption of Co(II) and Ni(II) metal ions on Fe-MCM-41 was achieved in 30 minutes and 15 minutes, respectively. The adsorption capacity of Fe-MCM-41 for Co(II) metal ion was 62.89 mg/g and for Ni(II) metal ion was 42.28 mg/g. The adsorption energy of Fe-MCM-41 for Co(II) metal ion was 14.28 kJ/mol and for Ni(II) metal ion was 14.29 kJ/mol. Adsorption of Fe-MCM-41 for binary system of Co(II) and Ni(II) metal ions showed low selectivity.
