- Background: This study aimed to assess whether there are significant differences between prostate volume measured using transabdominal ultrasonography and transrectal ultrasonography in patients with benign prostate enlargement. Objective: On the number of study subjects 35 male patients from the urology sent to radiology with clinical benign prostate enlargement in the department of Radiology Dr.Sardjito. The research design was a cross sectional study. Decision subjects performed sequentially (consecutive). Subjects examined twice: first examination performed transabdominal ultrasound prostate volume was then determined after the examination transrectal prostate volume was also determined. Differences in the size of the prostate volume between the two examinations were analyzed with paired t-test. Characteristics of the study subjects are described based on the age, prostate volume and the volume difference of the results were analyzed and calculated average value. Result : Mean ± SD results obtained for the mean prostate volume as measured by transabdominal ultrasonography 45.37 ± 26.67 ml greater than transrectal ultrasonography 41.65 ± 27.12 ml. And the non-parametric Wilcoxon test results demonstrate the value of P = 0.000, meaning there is a significant mean (P <0.05) between prostate volume were examined with transabdominal and transrectal. Conclusion: Prostate volume measurement using transabdominal ultrasound measurement of prostate volume compared using transrectal ultrasonography had a statistically significant difference in patients with benign prostate enlargement. The mean prostate volume was measured using transabdominal greater than transrectal. This measurement is influenced by the ability of the examiner (operator dependent) and the volume of urine in the bladder. Transr ectal ultrasonography also has a superior ability to display lesions in the prostate such as nodules, cysts and calcification
