- Social change from traditional to modern societies are characterized by a shift in the form of extended families into nuclear families to impact the pattern of interactions, the function and role of family members in the care of elderly parents. Currently, fulfillment services for the elderly through social institutions such as day care options for the elderly has become synonymous with reduced physical function in compliance activities independently. The shift function fulfillment services for the elderly be indicative of a shift in mindset as a determinant of individual rationality. In this study, the rationality in question is the underlying desire of the elderly to live in Elderly Social Institution. This study aims to determine the impact of these changes on the rationality of the elderly, find out the underlying reason for the elderly to live in social institutions as well as how the elderly adaptation in social institutions. The concept of rationality used in identifying the use of the concept of rational action according to Weber. Shape the rationality customized with options and considerations in selecting elderly living in social institutions, which are then categorized these choices. This research uses descriptive qualitative method to be able to understand the rational actions undertaken by individuals based on information obtained from informants related to social background, education, and past lives. Techniques of field data collection through interviews observation, documentation and literature. The informants of this study were elderly occupants Social Institution (PSTW) unit Budi Luhur Kasongan Bangun Jiwo Bantul, Yogyakarta . The results of this study indicate that the majority of seniors who choose to live at home have reasons related to the value oriented rationality that includes the desire to live quietly and multiply worship, the desire for freedom and does not depend on the child and family, the desire to avoid loneliness, as well as treating trauma past. While other seniors have a reason to live in social institutions instrumental rationality based on goal -oriented to obtain maximum service retirement through social institutions. Of both rationality underlying the elderly to stay at home is related to the adaptation of the elderly themselves at home. Elderly with a value -oriented rationality reason more adaptable and interact at home with a relationship with fellow members homes and participate in every activity. This is in contrast to the elderly who live in homes with instrumental rationality. They tend to have a closed interaction and reluctant to participate in any activities at home.
