- Marker compounds are chemically defined constituents or groups of constituents of a herbal substance, a herbal preparation or a herbal medicinal product which are of interest for control purposes independent of whether they have any therapeutic activity. Marker compounds have an important role in control quality of herbal medicines because there are a lot of points in control quality that need marker compound as their components. Mahoni seeds (Swietenia mahagoni (L.) Jacq) contain a lot of pharmacological activities such as antibacterial activity, sitotoksik activity, antiulcer activity, antifungal activity, anti-HIV activity, antiinflammation activity, analgesic activity, antipiretik activity, hipoglikemik activity, and inhibition of platelet aggregation activity (Bhurat et al., 2011). Because of that, mahoni seeds are herbal substance that are often developed as herbal medicines. In order to make mahoni seeds to become secure and efficacious, mahoni seeds must be quality controlled before the herbal medicines of mahoni seeds are sold. In this research, mahoni seeds are extracted using ethanol during 24 hours with maseration method. Maseration products are separated using preparative Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) method. Spots that appear from preparative TLC method are scratched to be isolated. Isolated spots are characterized using spectrometer ultraviolet, infrared, mass, H-NMR, C-NMR, DEPT, HMQC, and COSY. Analysis result of spectra then interpreted to determine the structure of compound. Characterization result shows that isolated compound is one of the limonoid group which m/z 430,539, has carbonil group, -OH group, C-O group, and has maximal absorption wave 230 nm. Isolated compound is compared with extract ethanolic of mahoni seeds and shows that isolated compound can be used as marker compound for mahoni seeds.
