- The influence of malonic and succinic acids on photoreduction of mercury(II) ions has been studied. The photoreduction of Hg(II) ions was carried out by irradiating Hg(II) solution in the presence of malonic acid and succinic acid at pH 4 in batch reactor equipped with UV light at various of times and accompanied by stirring. Moreover, the influence of photoreduction time and organic acid concentration toward the effectiveness on Hg(II) photoreduction has also been evaluated. The concentration of Hg(II) ions in solution was determined using Cold Vapor-Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (CV-AAS) by standard curve technique. The results showed that the concentration of Hg(II) ions in the presence of malonic and succinic acids decreases with or without irradiation, due to photoreduction and reduction, respectively. The effectiveness of photoreduction of Hg(II) ions in the presence of malonic acid is greater than that in the presence of succinic acid. The irradiation time in the presence of malonic acid gives maximum photoreduction after 3 hours and in presence of succinic acid reaches after 4 hours. The addition of malonic acid and succinic acid that can decrease the concentration of Hg(II) at optimal level at mole ratio of acid to Hg(II) 2:1.
