- Most of the treatment in periodontal surgeries will lead to traumatic injuries of the gingiva. The main requirement due to the healing process of the gingival tissue damage is collagen. Collagen has an important role in the engagement of mesenchymal wound healing. One of the good herbal remedies which has capability as collagen trigger is guava leaves. Guava leaves (Psidium guajava Linn.) contain several compounds, such as flavonoids and saponins that hasten the process of gingival wound healing. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of topical application produced from guava leaves (Psidium guajava Linn.) extract gel in collagen density on gingival wound healing of Sprague dawley . The study subjects consisted of 27 male white rats strain (Sprague dawley), aged 3-month-old. Each rats were injured by the diameter of 2,5 mm punch biopsy, located at the area of lower centralis incisor labial of gingiva. The subjects were divided into 3 groups, namely as positive control (using a (Aloclair gel ), treatment (70% guava leaves extract gel), and negative control group (CMC-Na gel). Three rats of each group were decapitated on the day of 3, 7, and 14. Histological preparations of scar tissue were colored by Mallory Trichrome staining. The purpose of Mallory staining was order to assess the collagen density as wound healing parameter. Data was obtained, then it was being tested using Kruskall Wallis and Mann- Whitney test. The result of data analyzation showed that there was no stastically significant differences between treatment and positive control group, but there was stastically significant differences (p<0,05) between treatment and negative control group on the day of 3, 7, and 14. As conclusion, the use of topical application produced from guava leaves (Psidium guajava Linn.) extract gel could induce collagen density in the process of gingival wound healing for Sprague dawley.
