  • One of methods radioactive waste processing especially for high level waste is volume reduction. Zeolite is a mineral with alumina silica tetrahidrate crystal as a primary structure. Zeolite is easy to find because there are many in Indonesia. The main objectives of this research were to study the zeolite potency as an immobilization matrix of high level radioactive waste, to investigate the effect of sintering time and temperature and to compare the properties of borosilicate ceramic glass with the borosilicate glass by testing their leaching rate and porosities. Borosilicate glass in this research was made by heating zeolite, TiO2 (5% of total mass mixture), Na2CO3 and Na2B4O7.10H2O at 1200oC for 5 hours. Then, the mixtures (compounds) were sintered at difference temperature of 500oC, 600oC, and 700oC with the heating rate of 3oC/min. The borosilicate ceramic glass was tested to find its leaching rate and calculated the porosity. The result of the leaching rate and porosity of borosilicate glass-ceramic has been compared with the result of borosilicate glass. Based on result of the test, leaching rate of borosilicate glass after 21 days was 6.21Ã10-6 g·cm-2·d-1(3.20Ã107Bq·cm-2 ·d-1) and its porosity was 23.5%. The leaching rate of borosilicate ceramic glass which is sintered at 500oC after 21days was 5.93Ã10-6 g·cm-2·d-1(3.06Ã107 Bq·cm-2·d-1) and its porosity was 29.86%, one sintered at 600oC after 21days was 5.63Ã10-6 g·cm-2·d-1 (2.90Ã107 Bq·cm-2·d-1) and its porosity was 17.73% and one sintered at 700oC after 21days was 5.40Ã10-6 g·cm-2 ·d-1(2.79Ã107 Bq·cm-2·d-1) and its porosity was 33.04%. The leaching rate of borosilicate ceramic glass and borosilicate glass were in agreement with IAEA standard. Zeolite can be used for a high level radioactive waste in the form of ceramic glass. Meanwhile, increasing sintering time and temperature decreased the leaching rate and the porosity of borosilicate ceramic glass. In addition, the properties of borosilicate ceramic glass were better than one of borosilicate glass.
