  • Compiled with intelligence and brilliance, Abraham Lincolnâ��s speeches are remarkable for the entire world over the history. The speeches are renowned by its logic, clarity and also the use figurative expressions. In regard to this matter, the research tries to discover the figurative languages in the form of metaphors. Five remarkable speeches near and during Lincolnâ��s presidency are examined in this research. The metaphors found in these speeches are interpreted to reveal Lincolnâ��s original intention and moral values. The research is to interpret and appreciate Lincolnâ��s metaphor expressions through Andrew Goatlyâ��s theory (1997). The theory views a metaphor from a 3 (three) stages: (1) the vehicle is the metaphor itself, the symbols for certain meanings
