  • Recently, development of climate change and environmental issues became a major focus in International Relations study. This research is going to elaborate the interconnectedness between environments with socio-economical as well as political issues. It is the manifestation of development and environmental governance as a major variable in a sub-regional cooperation. This research uses Political Ecology as the main approach. One of the most emerging subregional cooperation to address environmental issues and development is Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). GMS is a development cooperation mechanisms designed and sponsored by the Asian Development Bank. In 1992, GMS was initiated to improve economic development in natural economic areas of the Mekong river in Asia, namely Yunnan Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in the People's Republic of China and five ASEAN member countries including Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam. GMS member countries have benefited from cooperation in the GMS. As a pioneer and one of the nation states that are the fastest growing economies in Southeast Asia, Thailand will be the focus in this study. Through the implementation of the strategy in the GMS CEP mechanism using political ecology approach, this study will focus on the implications and influence on the development of green growth within five years in Thailand Thaksin Shinawatra era of leadership, back in 2001-2006. The reason behind the focus on Thaksinâs leadership era is, within five years of his leadership, Thailand managed to achieve significant accomplishments in the areas of green growth indicators.
