- This research entitled �Gerobak� short story by Seno Gumira Ajidarma, Barthes�s semiotic approach motivated by mudflow phenomenon that represented in the text and it has related to Lapindo mudflow phenomenon. The short story expresses a view of social condition in society. This research aims to reveal the meanings that depart from referential code in S/Z in the short story with elaborating of lexis and Barthes�s five codes relationship. First, this short story has the textual fact hidden meaning. Second, the analyzing result shows that mudflow as a theme, which serves as a symbol political tool for power interest in society. The meaning of mudflow in city or urban society is as an oppressor or impoverishment tool, while for rural or marginal society as a legitimate tool. Third, the textual facts state that there is no class as oppressor or suppressed because all class can be oppressor. Fourth, it expresses the decay of economy sector that creates a poverty problem. Fifth, it describes the Indonesian expectation future that triggered by high- sensitivity and lead to inter-community conflicts.
