  • Background. Common cold was the second rank of top ten diseases at Lampung Province in 2010, which was 23,41% of total patient visited. The average pharmacies at Metro city served more than 75 patients a day who complain common cold, which the number of common coldâ��s drug at the pharmacy more than 50 kind of common coldâ��s drug. This large number of common coldâ��s drug at the market affect people in choosing a drug. Objectives. Improving knowledge and behavior of high school students in Metro city in self medication of common cold with CBIA method, and identifying the difference of effectiveness between CBIA and lecture method in common cold self medication. Method. Quasi experimental design was used in this study with pre test - post test control group design. Sixty four high school students as research subject which equally divided into CBIA group and lecture group. Knowledge and behaviour assessed through a questionnaire that measured by pre and post intervention. CBIA and lecture intervention did after one time pretest and twice post test with one month time point. One way ANOVA test used to compare knowledge and behavior before and after intervention, whereas independent sample t test use to compare the difference of knowledge and behavior enhancement high school students between CBIA and lecture group. Result. The result showed mean of knowledge and behaviour increased for both groups with scores range 1-10 (independent sample t-test, p=0,000). Mean of knowledge scores in CBIA group was from 4,7 to 7,6, whereas lecture group was from 4,8 to 5,8. The scores of CBIA group behavior was from 4,2 to 8,6, whereas lecture group was from 5,0 to 6,1. Conclusion. CBIA method improved knowledge and behavior of high school students in Metro city about common cold self medication and its application more effective than lecture method.
