- Background. Muscle mass and strength decreased with age. Hand grip strength test is a valid and simple alternative to represent the assessment of muscle strength, it can even be a predictor of morbidity and mortality. On the other hand, albumin is the main protein in the human body that plays an important role in the mechanism of muscle contraction. Aim. This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between serum albumin levels with muscle strength as measured by hand grip strength tests in a population of elderly women in posyandu lansia. Method. This study was designed with cross-sectional method. The study subjects were elderly women in the posyandu lansia in Kecamatan Kalasan Kabupaten Sleman. Serum albumin level was examined in the laboratory used bromcresol green method.. Hand grip strength was measured with a Takei handgrip dynamometer. Pearson test was used to analyze the correlation between serum albumin with hand grip strength. Statistical analyzes were performed with a computer program. Statistically significant differences were determined by the value ( p < 0.05 ). Results. 40 samples were obtained in the study with a mean age of 71.73 ± 6.79 years. The mean BMI was 22.39 ± 4.0 kg / mÂ2, mean serum albumin was 4.33 ± 0.25 and mean hand grip strength was 19.65 ± 3.11. Positive correlation Pearson test was statistically significant ( r 0.399 , p = 0.011 ) between serum albumin and hand grip strength.
