  • Background: According to WHO, stroke is the third leading cause of death in developing country after coronary heart disease and cancer. Some of the risk factors are modifiable. One of them is obesity as measured by waist-to-hip ratio. But, obesity as a risk factor of stroke is remaining unclear. Objective: To identify an increased waist-to-hip ratio as risk factor of stroke. Method: Case controldata analysis between the period of August 2013 and September 2013. Study was carried out in Stroke Unit, Dahlia II IRNA I, and Poli Saraf of RSUP Dr. Sardjito Yogyakarta. Cases: 20 female subjects aged >45 who were diagnosed with stroke. Controls: 20 female subjects aged >45 who were diagnosed with conditions other than stroke. Those 40 subjects were categorized as obese and nonobese as measured by waist-to-hip ratio. Result: Increased waist-to-hip ratio is not a risk factor for stroke OR=3,27 (95%CI: 0,80-13,35). Hypertension is a modifiable risk factor for stroke OR=7,0 (95%CI: 1,74- 28,17). Diabetes mellitus is a confounding factor for stroke OR=3,86 (95%CI: 0,67-22,10). Frequency of exercise is a confounding factor for stroke OR=3,86 (95%CI: 0,67-22,10). Conclusion: Increased waist-to-hip ratio is not a risk factor for stroke.
