  • Background: Ischemic strokes (IS) comprise 87% of all strokes. Ischemic stroke shares many risk factors with myocardial infarction (MI) and coronary artery disease (CAD), including smoking and high blood pressure. Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) undergoes transcriptional and posttranscriptional induction by hypoxia in the vicinity of tumor necrosis and in various models of ischemia. The gene that encodes VEGF is comprised of a 14-kb coding region with 8 exons and 7 introns located on chromosome 6.16. Aim of the study: is to know the frequencies of genotype and allele of VEGF gene, to explore whether individual with genotype DD has higher tendency to have acute ischemic stroke and also for allele D itself. Methods: The design of case control studies. Eighty people of total subjects research, consisting of a group of cases 40 patients suffer from acute ischemic stroke and 40 controls (healthy people). VEGF gene I/D -2549 polymorphism is determined by Polymerase Chain Reaction with specific primers. Results: The distribution of genotype frequency DD and ID on the acute ischemic stroke patients is 13 (32.5%) and 19 (47.5%) meanwhile for the healthy people is 13 (32.5%) and 22 (55.0%). Percentage of Odd Ratio (OR) genotype DD is 1.750 (95% CI = 0.591-5.903) while allele D is 0.857 (95% CI = 0.457-1.607). Conclusion: Genotype DD and allele D frequencies are not higher in acute ischemic stroke patients than healthy people. However, genotype DD is the risk factor to get acute ischemic stroke but not for allele D in Aceh.
